Using Vudu to Digitize Your Collection of DVDs and Blu-Rays

Many people bring their video collections for long-term storage at Elite Storage in Lafayette, CO. As most are aware, VHS tapes are not well-suited to extreme temperature shifts, and beyond being obsolete, they will not store well and are prone to melting, warping, etc. If you have family movies on VHS, it is time to find a digital conversion software or service to move these memories to a stable and long-term solution.

Most people assume that their DVDs and Blu-rays are safe at all temperatures, but this is simple not the case. PC World recommends that DVDs and Blu-rays are safe to be stored between 23 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit. Other, more conservative sources recommend that the optimum storage temperature for DVD disks is between 55 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

With the fluctuations in Colorado’s temperature, if you follow the conservative optimum guidelines, disk storage is better in the home, or, if not possible, in temperature controlled storage, like that which we offer here at Elite Storage.

What options are available for digital movies?

With the vast library of digital movies available for streaming on services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, not to mention those that can be purchased from iTunes, Google Play, and Disney, physical disks are becoming more obsolete. Many people are ditching the disks and maintaining a digital library.

What is Vudu Disk to Digital?

There are several options to convert your collection to digital, many of which involve shady practices around copyright protection. A low-cost, legal, and effective method is to use Vudu’s disk to digital program. It is important to note that not all movies are eligible for the Disc to Digital conversion.

You must be registered with Vudu to digitize your collection. Membership is free and no billing information is required to sign up. Essentially, you can purchase a low-cost HD ($5) or SD ($2) digital copy of your DVD or Blu-ray (HDX – $5) collection to store online. You either download a mobile version in which you scan the UPC code on your disk case. A desktop program is available and requires you to have the disk inserted into the disk drive for the scan. If a digital conversion is available, you can watch the film from a mobile device, smart TV, etc. (Vudu is not available on for Fire TV.)

By converting your files to digital ones, you can easily backup or replace your DVD collection and regain space in your home.) Of course, you can replace your collection with digital copies via iTunes, Amazon Video, and Google Play, but checking on Vudu is a great way to save some money!
