We also want to make sure we give you useful storage knowledge so that you get the most out of your experience. Today, we’re going to talk about some of the biggest and most common mistakes when it comes to using a storage unit.
Storing Food
This might seem obvious to most people but you should never store food of any kind in your storage unit. This is the easiest way to attract pests; even with what you may think is safe packaging. Food also can mold or rot which creates quite an unpleasant odor. It’s best to just keep it out altogether.
Using Newspaper for Wrapping
You should never wrap any of your belongings with newspaper. The ink from the newspaper will start to bleed and smudge overtime. This will create quite the mess and it’s not easy to remove. The acidity in newspapers can also damage certain items. Wrap your items in ink-free paper, cloth, or bubble-wrap instead.
Not Labeling Boxes
Can you imagine entering your storage unit to several unlabeled boxes and having no idea what box contains what? Sounds pretty stressful. To avoid this, label everything before putting into storage so that you always know what’s what. It’s also a good idea to put the stuff you use most near the front so that you can access it quickly.
Not Draining Your Appliances
Appliances such as refrigerators or washing machines will need to be thoroughly drained before they are moved into storage. This is because residual water can lead to water damage or mildew. These things could potentially ruin your appliances and they don’t usually come cheap.
Packing Too Heavy
It’s easy to put a bunch of heavy items into a box without making sure there is even distribution amongst you boxes. This could lead to a pretty painful move when it comes time to actually move your boxes into storage. We don’t want you to hurt yourself! Be careful and pack boxes that you can easily manage.
